A Review Of Belinda Hughes’ New Organic Skin Clinic in South Yarra, Melbourne – Part 1

Before we start, you should know that Belinda’s Customised Organic Facial was given to me in exchange for writing this review… an awesome perk of being a beauty blogger.  All of the products I took home on the day were purchased with my own money.  The opinion expressed below is my honest opinion and the fact that I did not pay for the facial does not alter my view of the clinic or the products in any way.  I am not otherwise affiliated with Belinda Hughes Organic Skin Clinic or NaturalBeautyExpert.co.

Walking into Belinda Hughes Organic Skin Clinic, I was nervously excited.

I had been invited by Belinda to her newly launched organic skin clinic in the leafy, upmarket suburb of South Yarra, Melbourne, to review of her popular Organic Customised Facial.

If you haven’t heard of Belinda Hughes before, let me get you up to speed.  She is the Melbourne-based founding editor of natural health, beauty and lifestyle website, NaturalBeautyExpert.co, a professional beauty therapist with 12 plus years’ experience, who’s spent the last decade working with some of the biggest industry brands training day spas all over Australia.  You may have seen her in publications such as Women’s Health & Fitness magazine, Timeout, Mamamia, Body & Soul Online, Spa & Clinic magazine or onstage at the Natural & Organic Supershow, Sydney Beauty Tradeshow, Mind, Body & Spirit Festival and Girls Day Out.

An exciting new chapter in Belinda’s career is the recent re-launch of her gorgeous new organic skin clinic in South Yarra, Melbourne where she offers a unique menu of cutting edge, bespoke natural treatments to transform and build healthy skin.

To be honest, Belinda’s invite couldn’t have come at a better time in my life.  If any of you are subscribed to my online newsletter, The 11th Monthly, you would know that the past couple of months have been particularly trying on me.  In fact, I had to reschedule with Belinda  four times before I was able to fit her into my overcrowded schedule.  When I finally made it, life had taken its toll on my skin and I was needing her services more than ever.

What followed was the most divine bespoke facial that left me floating out of that clinic an hour or so later.  Belinda’s specialty: customizing her services to target your skin’s unique requirements.  This is where she shines.  And you should know your in good hands.

A Customised Organic Facial

Nerves aside, Belinda welcomed me into her lovely new space with a friendly smile, putting me at ease instantly.  But make no mistake, as she introduced herself I could see that she was already scanning my face and identifying my skin’s needs.

So with the housekeeping out of the way (in the form of some introductory small talk and paperwork), I was ready to receive my facial.

Identifying The Skin’s Condition

I had presented with unsightly dry, flaky and inflamed skin.  As Belinda applied the first product, a Cream Cleanser by OrganicSpa, she talked me through the sad state of my skin.

There is damage to the acid mantle, which is the skin’s natural defense barrier.  While we couldn’t be sure of the exact cause, as we went through my current routine, it became clear that one important element was missing… “a serum”, Belinda explained.  Serums are a powerful way of delivering essential vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants to the deeper layers of the skin.

I had been using a lot of raw organic cold pressed coconut oil, mainly for cleansing, but sometimes for hydrating too.  Belinda pointed out a couple of problems with this.  First of all, coconut oil is a carrier oil, which means that unless you give it something to carry (i.e. mix it with other beneficial skin-loving ingredients), your skin isn’t really going to receive much benefit.  Secondly, Belinda explained that coconut oil, in its raw state, is comedogenic when used as a moisturiser on the face.  In some people, this will cause acne.  In others, it can create little pockets under the surface of the skin.

This is interesting to me because my experience with coconut oil had always been a positive one, or so I thought.  Personally I never had an issue with acne, but I can see now that I fall into the latter class because I have been noticing some red bumps around the cheeks.

Belinda clarified that raw coconut oil is okay to be used as a makeup remover cleanser, provided it is removed afterwards with a warm cloth.  However, it should only be used as a moisturiser if it is professionally formulated in a cream with other oils.

Revealing Baby Smooth Skin

Because of the damage to my skin’s acid mantle, my face had built up a dense layer of coarse skin to protect itself.  This had to go.  Belinda applied a gentle AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) cream exfoliant, followed by a light buff with a clay mask to help peel away that rough barrier and rediscover the hidden baby-smooth skin underneath.  This would allow the skin to more readily absorb all of the active nutrients Belinda was about to feed it.  My sensitive skin reacted to the AHA by turning bright red (no surprise there)!  Thankfully, it calmed down significantly by the end.

Cutting-Edge Technology With The Sonophoresis Blade

An infusion of OrganicSpa vitamin C serum and gel mask was applied next using a Sonophoresis blade.  The blade is a pulsating device that looks a bit like a spatula.  It uses cutting edge ultra-sound technology to peel away the outer layers of the skin, enhancing the skin’s cell renewal process and allowing the products to penetrate really deeply.

Using the blunt end of the blade (I should mention there are no sharp ends…), Belinda glided the vitamin C serum and gel mask over my skin.  What resulted was an intense boost of hydration, radiance and youthfulness and skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom.  Could this be a natural alternative to botox?  It was seriously amazing!

A Lymphatic Drainage and Presser Point Face, Neck and Scalp Massage

After treating my thirsty skin to a cream mask for deep hydration, calming and nourishment, Belinda treated me to the most divine lymphatic drainage and presser point massage on the face, neck and scalp.  Oh my god.  Let me tell you, it was so incredibly relaxing.  At some point, I felt completely weightless.

Belinda finished the treatment with a rich, creamy moisturiser and eye gel.

All in all, my facial was divine and I was really impressed with the results.  Only a week later, I was already noticing a massive improvement in my skin’s condition.  I really hope I will be able to make the time in my hectic life to become a regular customer!

Belinda’s Customised Organic Facial costs AUD139.00 and you can find her salon at Level 1, 71 Davis Avenue, South Yarra in Melbourne, Australia.

OrganicSpa Professional Skincare

Belinda used the following OrganicSpa products during my facial:

On Belinda’s advice, I purchased the cream cleanser, vitamin C serum and moisture rich.  I also received the eye gel as part of a promotion for buying three products and I’ve been exclusively using these products since my facial (which was about three weeks ago at the time of writing).  OrganicSpa is only available for purchase at selected day-spas (Belinda’s skin clinic being one of them).  You either need to receive an in-house treatment or have an online consultation with Belinda to access them.

What a delightful sounding experience Matilda – I’m starting to switch to organic products. Apart from the good things they do for my skin, applying them is so much more pleasurable because of the natural fragrances, and the market is really expanding so there’s lot of choices xxx
